5 design tips to make a room look bigger

Dream location vs.

Dream Square footage

As Austin Apartment Locators, we know the struggle. Tiny houses and apartments are a trend, and sometimes a more spacious floor plan could mean having to raise the budget. However, if you love the charms and challenges of small spaces, but not the way it looks, there are a few things you could do to make your floor plan look bigger.

Whether you are an Austin student sharing a 1 bed 1 bath with a roomie or a professional searching for a well-priced Studio near Downtown, or anyone in between, there are thousands of ways to create the illusion of more square footage. Spoiler alert: you don't have to spend lots of money, just have some basic interior design knowledge.

Here at PURE Apartment Locating, we believe that the place you choose for a living needs to be as amazing as possible. So if you are on a budget and end up leasing at a smaller apartment, here are 5 basic design tips to make your small space look more inviting, chic, and yeah, also bigger :)

1. Use color wisely

If you have the power to create your own color schemes at your new Austin apartment, go for it! Color is super important regarding space. Light colors add air into a room, while dark colors could give depth and might help you to emphasize a feature.

Pro tip: think of a color pallet that's light and neutral for your walls and furniture, and add just a touch of some darker or stronger colors on objects to create contrast.

2. Make natural light your BFF

Whether your Austin Apartment has HUGE windows or not, taking advantage of all the natural light that comes in will open your space. Remember that air and brightness create an illusion of more square footage, so take advantage of that!

You could set some mirrors on darker walls that don't receive too much natural light. Mirrors will bounce the natural light, creating the illusion of a bigger room.

3. Become a minimalism king/queen

Repeat these mantras: Less is more, keep it simple. Less is more, keep it simple. If you haven't used something in a year, get rid of it! Smaller rooms will look bigger if they don't have too many objects to focus your attention on.

And talking about keeping it simple, the same rule applies to furniture. Some fewer large pieces of furniture that fit into one area works better than adding tons of tiny items. This trick will often make the room look larger and with so much additional space!

EXTRA EXTRA: When selecting your furniture pieces, search for sofas and armchairs that are raised on legs. This creates an additional floor space and will also be useful on those Sunday house cleanings.

4. Be a little picky about decor

Decor pieces are a fantastic opportunity to express yourself and add character to a room. But sometimes, the wrong elements could withhold space within an apartment.

When adding drapes, try to make sure they're the same color as your walls. This will reduce the chance of people bringing their attention to the walls.

A better way to make a room noticeable would be placing a huge art piece into an empty wall or a big rug to separate a space. If you need a recommendation for an amazing rug store, our friends over at Apartment F off of East 6th street would be the perfect people to chat with!

Another decor trick that could help your small room stand out would be placing a big floor-to-ceiling bookshelf. This trick will expand how high your ceilings. Plus: more storage!

5. Learn how to place your elements

Now that you have chosen the color of your walls, decor, furniture and all, you would need to know how to put them into the right spots.

There are a few tricks you could with the disposition of your rooms to make them look bigger, like pulling your furniture some inches away from the walls. This will create an illusion of spaciousness and will also help you to preserve the wall painting.

Don't be afraid of leaving an empty space. Remember what air and brightness do?  Some blank spaces on a corner or a bookshelf could add air within areas.

We hope these design tips help you decorate your small rooms to make them stand out.
